English as a Second Language – “ESL for Adults” Classes

“ESL for Adults” classes are semester-based English as a Second Language classes offered in the fall and spring to adults who live or work in Richardson and our surrounding communities. This includes Richardson, Lake Highlands, parts of North Dallas and parts of Garland. RALC’s ESL for Adults program offers English classes at 12 levels, beginning to advanced, where students learn to read, write, speak and understand English. Online classes incorporate Digital Literacy into the Curriculum, teaching students to utilize remote work, email, presentation, and forms tools. Due to the great number of parents in our ESL programs, the curriculum also incorporates family literacy, with lessons on school and family-related topics.

  •
  • Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) is designed to help students who do not read or write English but can speak and understand the language. This class has a heavy focus on phonics. There will be two sections of this class offered back-to-back for 45 minutes each.
  •
  • English Language Foundations (ELF) class, formerly called Basic Literacy, is designed for individuals who do not speak, read, write, or understand English, but their native language is written in Latin-based script.  In this course, students learn to recognize, write, and say the English alphabet, numbers, and basic vocabulary. They also move into basic verbs and sentence construction.
  •
  • We also offer a Book Club for upper level students who want to improve their English language acquisition skills through group reading.  The Book Club facilitator will lead students through pre and post reading exercises such as vocabulary review and reading comprehension exercises, as well as taking turns reading the text aloud during the 1-hour session each week.
